3M06. Weekdays. Catalogue goods. Train sponsored by Brian Mills. Sunderland - ?
A company-sponsored parcels goods train run for the benefit of catalogue sales firm Brian Mills. The depot was at Hendon, on Sunderland's South Dock branch. The train was often heavily loaded with vans, passing Seaton Carew around 20.30 on weekdays.
The headcode was controversial from its appearance on the coast line, showing optionally 1M06 or 4M06. Depicting a loco displaying 1M98, noted North-East railway photographer Ian S. Carr commented it was erroneous and should have been 3J20, being the 17.15 departure to Sheffield. Carr added that during the early 1970s, up to four such parcels trains left Sunderland on Monday to Friday evenings, giving the Sheffield-bound train departure times as 17.15 (in 1973), 17.07 (1976) and 17.26 (1978). A book published by Carr shows a picture taken in 1976 of the loco running around to travel via Newcastle. (1) So, 3M06 ran via the coast, but when exactly was it introduced, at what time did it depart the depot and where was it headed?
My first record of its appearance was 15 May 1973.
The last was in 1978.
From start to finish, Class '40's dominated, with occasional '25' and '31' examples becoming novelties.
